About the Bee Guy
Hi! When I was a geologist I had a hard time understanding some coworkers who literary ate, slept and dreamt rocks but, after discovering bees in 1984, I learned how important passion is when selecting a vocation; in the words of my ex-wife “bees, bees, bees, that’s all you ever think about anymore!”
For me, beekeeping has opened up a world of discovery and interest – plants, agriculture, history, travel, development projects, and a plethora of science projects. I’ve been doing bees in Fairbanks since 1984; and in 1997, combined my love of travel and beekeeping by traveling overseas (mainly to SE Asia and the Middle East) for development projects, conferences and the chance to escape the cold, dark winters in Fairbanks.
One thing I’ve learned both at home and abroad is there is no cookie-cutter, right-way, fool-proof recipe for managing bees. Learning to listen to the bees takes a while but eventually you’ll learn that you must assist the bees – after all, they have been doing their thing for millions of years and have it pretty much figured out. Taking a class or partnering up with an experienced beekeeper is the best step toward learning.
I have been teaching beginner classes each spring here in Fairbanks since 1986 (see the home page and click on class). I run the classes in April about the same time of the bee shipment arrivals (don’t worry, you have time to order bees if you’re taking the class). One nice thing about the class is we step out on my deck and see what I’ve been talking about in class. I guarantee the first words out of your mouth when you actually see eggs will be “They really are tiny!” They’re about 1 mm long. In class, you’ll see how to hive package bees (dumping the bees from the shipping container into your bee hive), what to look for on regular colony inspections and get one free on-site visit where I come to your house and go through the bee colony with you. Sign up on the “class” page.
Job 12:7-10 King James Version (KJV)
7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell
8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
Listen to the bees!
